Historical Back Ground of DCSC Campus

The Kagnew Battalions were a number of military units from the Imperial Ethiopian Army which fought as part of United Nations Command in the Korean War (1950–1953).

It was the first international unified command in history, and the first attempt at collective security pursuant to the Charter of the United Nations.  It was also the first experience of Ethiopian military participation in an international UN-led mission.  The current DCSC campus was the residence of those brave troops.  Therefore, it has a historical background in the history of Ethiopian military as well as participation in a peacekeeping mission.

The Establishment of The College

The Ethiopian Defense Force is vested with the responsibility of defending the constitutional system, the well-being of the people, and protecting the sovereignty of the country from internal and external threats; to implement all developmental policies and strategies designed by the government and the people without any threat, ensuring a peaceful environment is very crucial. To this end, the role of military leaders at all levels of the FDRE Defense Force is central to successfully discharge the responsibilities they shouldered.

Equipping leaders with military concepts, theories, practical skills, and attributes enables them to generate new ideas helpful in solving problems at critical times.  In order to deter the threat and if deterrence fails to defeat it in a short period of time with minimum cost in life and property, building a strong army focusing on manpower capability has paramount importance. Thus, the Defense established different leadershipeducation and training institutions (Academy, Colleges, and Universities) to strengthen military leadership with different levels of responsibilities to meet the needs of professional leaders and expertise.

EDCSC is one of those institutions that have been operational since Jan 2006, designed as Ethiopia’s first senior-level military Education College. At the beginning the college had been established in collaboration with American specialists and advisors.

The purpose of it is establishment is to train professional military leaders from all four services of the Defense force. Namely Ground Force, Air force, Naval force, and Special Campaign Force needed at the tactical/operational level leadership and also provide education and training for foreign higher officers from sister countries.

  • The policy direction is the government policy document known as “Foreign Affairs & National Security Policy and Strategy “(FANSPS -2002), Art. 3.6 “Building a reliable defense capability by focusing on manpower”.
